Dear Spiritual Family,

From Ephesians 4:3, “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

Recent events taking place around the world and some nearby prompt us to reach for that bond of peace that the Apostle Paul spoke to, two thousand years ago.

Close to our home in Georgia was the tragic high school shooting that took place in Winder that ended with four lives lost and others wounded. We sat in shock as the day unfolded – fears of the worst finally confirmed. After a time of prayer, we were guided to travel to Apalachee High School to offer support to the efforts there.

What we found was a community coming together to support one another with compassion and kindness – a mother and daughter placing flowers beneath the flag flying at half-staff, a grandmother who had been volunteering with the Salvation Army there to provide water and food for those who would work late into the night.

The overall feeling that was present and palpable was that of peace and gentleness. We were deeply touched to witness this. It helped us to feel God’s Presence with those whose lives had been so deeply affected.

Across our Nation and on foreign shores, there is great loss and pain as well. And thus, even more reason to focus on “making every effort to keep the unity of Spirit through the bond of peace.”

Angels in the skyMary remarked on that fateful evening there on the campus that the sky was filled with clouds that looked like angels. No doubt, God’s Heavenly Messengers were there bringing comfort and peace. No doubt they were there in the tunnels of Gaza and to everyone who faces such extreme difficulties.

May each of us grow stronger in the wake of the world’s challenges, reaching ever more resolutely for the peace of God that lies at the center of our Being – a peace that brings true unity and renewed hope.

With our love,

Rev. Steve and Mary
