Dear Spiritual Family,

A news reporter is typically asked by his or her editor when breaking a story, “Who is your source (for this information) and how reliable are they?” While they might be able to share that “source” with their editor, if it is an especially “sensitive” piece, that’s about where the answer ends.

And of course, in today’s world, these stories often conflict, depending on who is reporting them – sometimes they are diametrically opposite. It leaves us wondering, who is really telling the truth? Add to that a propensity to want to hear “our” version of the truth, and things can get way out of hand, hence so much of the division we witness around us. So, what can we do to heal them – these divisions that leave us confused and angry?

Virtually all of our deeply spiritual teachings direct us to the Highest Source, the Mind of God, for the Truth that sets us free. As an example, suppose we have surmised that Mr. X or Ms. Y are just “not good people.” They have a real problem, and we have plenty of “facts” to back that up. We have even enrolled some of our best friends to “confirm” this “fact.”

The Divine says, “Hold on. Look deeper, past the appearance of evil or even good, and see what I see; see what I made – a precious and holy Being, in fact, made in My Image. Ask yourself, how could it be otherwise? Can what is pure Love fashion anything of Itself that is not pure Love? And how can you truly love Me if you are unwilling to Love what is of Me?”

“Well, God, now that You put it that way…… You are the Source of all that Is. You are All Knowledge, All Power and All Presence. Maybe I rushed to judgement about _________. Come to think of it, You are as reliable as it gets. I guess the question I need to ask myself is, ‘Do I really believe in You?’ Either I do or I don’t. I get to decide.”

Of course, we live in a world where there is hatred and “wrongdoing,” to put it in mild terms. Yet, it is incumbent on each of us to seek the higher ground, to look beyond the pain and confusion and “division.” To stop at the appearances “in all their distressing disguises,” to quote Mother Teresa, is to get stuck in what does not serve us in the long run of eternity. We can honestly ask ourselves, “What is the point in having all this spiritual understanding if I  am going to stop short of using it?”

All this to say, the Word is out on You, beloved. The Word is out on all of Us. We can play, pretend, speculate, analyze until the cows come home, that we are something other than What God has made, but thankfully, we can never, ever undo what God has done or Whom God has made.

We can assure whoever or whatever the “editor” is that might question us, “I know my Source. This is my Story, and I’m sticking to It!

We love you,

Rev. Steve and Mary
